2026 will mark my 3rd year with Sussex Cty Rowing Club and I keep returning because of the coaching, the location and the rowing community at large. The programs they offer challenge you whatever your experience level. Highly recommend, it's a must experience for yourself.
This program has been an incredible experience for my high school daughter—and for me. The high school team trains hard year round and competes in regattas against many other high school teams. It has fostered discipline, camaraderie, and lasting friendships over the past few years, all supported by excellent coaching and a beautiful lake setting.
Living at the south end of Lake Mohawk, I've enjoyed watching the high school rowers out practicing on the water since I moved to the lake in 2022. In 2023, at 65, a friend told me that Tim Holovacs was looking to start a Master's Rowing program for adults. and coaxed me into trying scull rowing. I was skeptical since I have two knees and two hips replaced. In the Fall of 2023, about 20 people were interested in giving it a try, and I had my first 2-hour session. The four of us, all of whom had never rowed before, were a little clumsy in that quad, but with a little coaching from Tim, we eventually got in sync. I was a little sore that first day, having to use muscles that I haven't used since the Nixon Administration. The next time out, I felt Great! The following Summer of 2024, we officially began the first eight-week season with 30 rowers, averaging 60 years old. Since then, we have grown our membership to about 70 active members who come in and out of three 8-week sessions, with summer being the most popular. We continue to grow. If you're looking for a low-impact workout where you work in a team and get some fresh air and beautiful views, give it a try. All new rowers get to have a trial session on the lake. Membership is open to Lake Mohawk Country Club members and their guests.
What a great program! Beautiful lake, personal coaching, great workout and lots of fun!
Masters Rowing (age 22+) is a serious workout open to anyone of any age whether recent college grads or retirees. It is also a great way to make new friends, get out on the water and spy on the bald eagles and osprey who have made their homes at Lake Mohawk.
