Missouri State Museum is rather small and somewhat unimpressive. Mostly some displays inside the Capitol building. What there is, is less than many county museums offer.
Super pretty with the tulips
If you ever get the opportunity go here, it's worth a look. They are constantly making it better. They do a great job of showing you timeline, to the state of Missouri. As well as a lot of the artifacts that was found here. The Murals: Missouri’s "No Filter" History If the architecture is the skeleton of the building, the murals are the soul (and occasionally the "eccentric uncle"). While most state capitols have paintings of stoic men looking heroically into the distance, Missouri went a different route, most notably with the Thomas Hart Benton murals in the House Lounge. The "Show-Me" Realism: Benton didn’t believe in airbrushing history. His work, A Social History of the State of Missouri, features everything from hardworking pioneers to Jesse James holding up a train. It’s gritty, it’s vibrant, and it’s wonderfully crowded. The "Wait, is that allowed?" Factor: When they were first unveiled in 1936, people were a bit scandalized because he included things like a parent changing a baby's diaper and political bosses. It’s essentially the 1930s version of a "candid" Instagram post. Visual Storytelling: Beyond Benton, the building is covered in high-end art that captures the state's evolution. It’s like a giant, interactive history book, but you don't have to worry about a pop quiz at the end.
Good experience
Gorgeous paintings, interesting museum exhibits, and ornate architecture. The stained glass is my favorite part. Be sure to schedule plenty of time to explore all the floors. If legislation is in session,it's pretty busy during the week. You can stop in and view open sessions from the observation gallery or pop in to say hello to your local legislators. They offer tours and host special events. The museum exhibits change periodically as well. Outside, there are flowers and fountains bordering walkways with a great view of the Missouri River.
